Huw - 1969 MG 1300 MK.II

Huw

Meet Huw, our little MG1300 saloon. Huw has been part of our family since 1989, when we acquired him from a chap in Glasgow. Huw was christened by our daughters Rachel (in the photo) and Leila, when they were about thirteen or so.

After being used and abused as a “family” MG for about four-and-a-half years, the little fellow “went to sleep”. (That means the rust beat the MOT, and oil consumption exceeded petrol consumption, by the way).

As you’ll notice from the photo, taken in August 2002, Rachel is no longer thirteen, and Huw is no longer asleep! How this all came about is simple. Rachel decided to get married, and spurned my offer of one of Chauffeured Limousines’ Rollers or Bentleys – “wouldn’t it be nice Dad if we could have Huw as a bridal car – with all the childhood memories and stuff?” So from March to August, silly Dad spent all his spare time on, in, under, over, and everywhere else the little car could think of.

Huw in Jersey 2003And lo, the prince kissed the little car and was turned into an ugly, oily frog, while the little car was re-born! I’m awfully sorry I missed you all at the shows that year, and from time to time I wished I’d never agreed to give Rachel her wedding day wish. But the sheer pleasure of driving from Greenlaw to Dartmouth, tootling around while there, being chauffeured by Mr Kirkness on the big day, and cruising all the way back made it all worth while. And Rachel’s face too, of course! And 45 mpg at 55-60 mph on the motorways! BRILLIANT!
